edge of the forest

my thumb in the air

edge of the forest

where I’d slept that afternoon

after a long night of nothing before

I was hungry & broke again

as a saviour appeared

in a dirty white van stopping for me

he was going my way

asked questions of my life

that I tried not to answer

as the miles slipped away

he stopped in for gas

bought me cigarettes & coffee

offered a sandwich

I quickly ate

& as the time slipped to evening

the questions got more personal

I realised his interests were me

& man I was broke & hungry again

as my saviour offered a warm bed

a place of relative safety

all I had to do was play

I had to say thank you but no

my feelings don’t lay that way

& soon after he dropped me

side of the road

it was time for me to begin again
