It has been a while

since I danced in the rain

with you

I knew then in those moments

you were leaving me

had seen the crumpled practice notes

bottom of the dustbin

amongst the peelings

spent coffee grounds

& that was all gone

out of mind

caught out in a rainstorm

& nothing to do

but get wet

we sat & waited

under a dripping tree

for the rain to go

you to say the words

a second can be eternity

anticipating courage in another

marking time for the rain to cease

& it isn’t that I wanted your speech

your reasons why

but this being put on hold

waiting for the hammer to drop

was torture

& I knew you didn’t want that

but couldn’t yet see

past the rain

the happy today

that your goodbye to this

did not have to be an end

to us
