Crossing the road

in my old home town

I don’t come here much

too many memories

needing to drown

& this creature scuttled

across my path

as I struggled to recognise

the who of what it was

my old head teacher

devil of my early days

man I hated this guy

the way he tried to break me

every snide chance he took

to kick me, beat me

I have no idea the why

he hated me

but I remember he waited

all of a school holiday

to tackle me the first day

& how I swore revenge

to beat him in turn

once I got older

big enough to kick back

& now I see him

almost double

twisted

ruptured curved back

either the world has turned

done my doing

for me

or

his innate nature

escaped

for the world to see.
