Coffee

Trying to read
William Boyd
over coffee
they wander in
two ladies
one has a small dog
‘do you mind if we
sit here with the dog?’
they sit
& she begins
to tell the dog
it is a smelly dog
oh yes it is
a smelly dog
for ten minutes
in between ordering
soup & a roll
its
less fattening y’know
to be fair
the horse has
already bolted on that
but I’m trying to read Boyd
the lap dog
needs a tummy tickle
oh yes he does
they murmur
about friends
in between
telling the dog
it is a smelly dog
& she breaks the roll
with those fingers
I’m connecting the dots
as to why she’s single
she
is telling her friend
she drinks too much
can’t
find a fella
stave off the biscuit
craves
another glass of wine
there are many like us
she tells her friend
between tickling
the dog &
fingering the bread roll
Boyd is dead
to me now
I’m drinking
not sipping my coffee
getting out of there
away from smelly dog
lonely ladies
& Boyd
does not care
